Our People
Men and Women of "The Trade"

The Australians that have served in submarines, from the first that served in submarines of the Royal Navy during W.W.I and W.W.II to those that are serving today, are members of a unique community, a special breed.

That special bond developed by submarines is hard to break and this section is in honour of those that served "The Trade".

Our Boats
The Pioneers

Australia has had long history of operating submarines. They are all now part of the legend that makes up the history and culture of the Australian Submarine Force.

Our Boats
The Oberon Era

The Royal Australian Navy operated six Oberon class submarines from the 27th March 1967, with the commissioning of HMAS OXLEY, until the 15th December 2000 when HMAS OTAMA payed off.

The boats were all built in Scotland by Scott's Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd. at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

Our Boats
THE COLLINS CLASS

The Royal Australian Navy has six Collins class submarines. The class is home ported in Western Australia

The boats were all built in South Australia by the Australian Submarine Corporation

Our Homes
HMAS Platypus

HMAS PLATYPUS was designed and built to provide base support for the six '0' Class submarines of the Royal Australian Navy. The base was built on ground which was formerly part of the Royal Australian Naval Torpedo Establishment in Neutral Bay, Sydney.

Unfortunately "Plats" has gone, and so has the relationships and sense of being that your own home provides. The submarines now operate from HMAS Stirling in Western Australia with the skimmers.

Our Homes
OSBORNE HOUSE

The first submarine base in Australia surprisingly was not in Sydney but at Corio now a suburb of North Geelong, Victoria from 1920-1922. So why was the first base so far removed from the then main fleet at Sydney?

Our Pride
The Australian Dolphins

The story behind the Australian Submariner's Dolphins, the symbol that identifies our submariners and are worn with pride.

Our Flag
The Australian White Ensign

The formal announcement of a new ensign for the RAN was made by the Prime Minister on 23 December 1966. Originally it was intended to introduce the new ensign on the 1 May 1967 but this was subsequently amended to 1 March 1967

The Association
The Submarines Association Australia

The Sydney Chapter of the Submarine Old Comrades Association was the first chapter to be formed with the assistance of the SOCA London Branch, the oldest submarine association in the world, making the Submarines Association the second oldest association. The other Chapters of SOCA in both United Kingdom and overseas, plus other international associations were not founded until after the Second World War.
Our Mates, the Poms
The Royal Navy Fourth SM Squadron (SM4)

Before the introduction of the Oberon class submarines into service with the RAN SM4 provided the Australian and New Zealand navies submarines to support anti submarine training. These submarines were based at HMAS Penguin in Sydney.

This is the story of the men and boats attached to SM4.
